Expanded Play Gallery – Ayuko Onoue: From Artistic Expression to Augmented Play: Translating Emotions into Interactive AR Experiences

This talk presents Infinity, an art-based mobile augmented reality (AR) game designed to support adolescents in expressing and processing emotions through interactive experiences. Grounded in art-based methodologies and social-emotional learning, the game transforms abstract emotional expression into interactive AR gameplay. Players externalise emotions through drawing, which are converted into augmented objects that can be interacted with in physical space. The design is informed by a three-phase participatory process involving individual and collaborative expression, followed by translation into gameplay. Infinity also extends into an interactive exhibition that combines personal reflection with collective emotional mapping. By centring player-generated content, Infinity contributes a novel approach to emotion-centred AR design, highlighting how artistic expression can be translated into playful, multisensory experiences.
