Takayuki Todo (JP) is a media artist based in Japan. He holds a master’s degree from the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS), and his practice explores how people perceive animacy, agency, and otherness through gaze, movement, and nonverbal interaction. Working primarily with robotics and embodied systems, he creates installations that examine the emotional and ethical relationships formed between humans and machines. In 2018, he created SEER, a humanoid robot that uses mutual gaze and subtle facial expression to produce a compelling sense of presence. His recent work, Dynamics of a Dog on a Leash, stages a quadruped robot restrained by a chain, prompting responses of fear, empathy, and moral unease. The work received an Honorary Mention in the Prix Ars Electronica 2025 and has been presented internationally. Todo works as an independent artist, developing both the conceptual framework and physical systems for his projects.
